Why we protect our neighbors from la migra
The reason why there’s so many “illegal immigrants” in the US is because so many people benefit from cheap labor.
We could have an orderly immigration system and fairer economy if there was real enforcement and living wages, but Americans would have to also stomach much higher prices. There’s a reason why big business has been one of the loudest voices against this performative version of mass deportation because they collectively hire undocumented exploitable people as cheap labor.
People, particularly in California and blue cities, understand this and have come see the people living side-by-side them, the people who take care of our children and elderly, pick and cook our food, etc. as neighbors.
In LA, we learn Spanish to speak to our neighbors, and decent people protect our neighbors. We understand our close relationship with Mexico and the good fortune to have good neighbors.
There are negatives to uncontrolled immigration: people you don’t want coming in will. Sudden population influxes put a strain on services.
But what’s happening right now isn’t creating an orderly immigration system, it’s terrorizing our neighbors to satisfy White nationalists and their henchmen, the type of immigrants who don’t really care or understand what it means to live in a liberal democracy and what to pull the ladder up behind them. They’ll come for us all.
